Major Accommodation Proposal for Mackay Airport

A major accommodation precinct is being proposed at Mackay Airport.

Key local stakeholders say the development would help to relieve the critical strain on workforce accommodation options in the region, which is impacting employers, their operations and overall economic viability.

The concept was born out of the Greater Whitsunday Housing Summit in August which was hosted by Greater Whitsunday Communities and Regional Development Australia, Greater Whitsundays.

Mackay Airport is currently inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified and interested groups who would be interested in leasing purpose-built accommodation.

Mackay Airport Head of Operations Adrian Miles said: “As a crucial gateway to the Mackay region, Mackay Airport is committed to supporting economic growth and enhancing the overall experience for workers and residents alike,” he said.

“To this end, we are exploring the overall demand for development of a permanent workers accommodation precinct on a designated portion of airport land.”

The accommodation precinct would be strategically located within the airport precinct, offering convenient access to the terminal and industrial areas. It would include high-quality and flexible accommodation options, with a mix of studio, one bed and two bedroom units.

Interested groups are being invited to submit an EOI by the end of November.

Rob Cocco, Chief Executive Officer of Regional Development Australia Greater Whitsundays, said the proposed development could offer a long-term, strategic solution to the region’s housing concerns.

“There is a significant gap in certain housing types in the region, especially in regard to workforce accommodation,” he said.

“This is an opportunity for multiple sectors to collaborate effectively to explore solutions for our short-term accommodation needs. Lack of housing continues to impact a wide range of industries across our community, including tourism, agriculture, government and resources.”

“Mackay Airport is an ideal and highly accessible location for a project of this kind. We strongly support the proposal and believe there will be many local businesses keen to explore this concept further.”

Submissions can be emailed to Patrick.Bellot@cairnsairport.com.au, and should include the following:

  • Group profile (An overview of your group, including background)

  • Leasing requirements (A description of your specific accommodation needs and preferences within precinct)

  • Contact information

The EOIs received will be evaluated on their alignment to the project's objectives and financial viability to move onto the next steps of the development.
